Of course, amateur golf is full of well known events such as the U.S. Amateur Championship for men and women as well as juniors. Professionals also have specific golf tournaments they participate in to gain experience and even publicity when starting their career.
Most professional golf tournaments are held the same way. The first two days act as qualifying rounds after which the bottom players are cut. Then there are two more days of the competition, 18 holes per round.
The other type of tournament played by professionals is matchplay, played in either a one on one or two on two match. However this is but a treat for the golfers as there are very few events a year that this takes place such as the WGC matchplay championship and the biennially Presidents Cup.
Open golf tournaments, such as the British Open, are held to try and give amateurs the chance to break into the field of professional golf. Golfers progress through a number of rounds gaining them the privilege of playing in the Open, where they compete against professionals.
Amateurs also get the chance to play in the Majors. The Masters Golf tournament at Augusta invites the winners of several prestigious events to participate in the Major. That includes the winner of the U.S. and British Amateur Championships.
With golf on the rise as a sport the professional golf season has seen a large increase in length, going on almost all year round, making the coverage of golf news a massive industry and giving all of us an even better chance to go and see a professional event live and get a true feel for the atmosphere that the professionals seem to thrive on.
Some local golf tournaments are held to raise money for specific organizations or for charities. Anyone can participate and they can be quite fun. Most of the local golf tournaments are one day events and consisting of up to 36 holes. Prizes maybe awarded for points or most birdies to name a few. Many of these events are also Texas scramble or four ball better ball format.
There is a social benefit to these events. On some occassions you will play with people that you barely know and end up bonding over the mutual hobby that you share.
When you are a regular participant in golf tournaments, you can see why the pros love them so much. Although you won’t be shooting the same low scores that the pros do, you can sure have a lot of fun!
